The 1. originally/original Tate Gallery, opened in 1897, was designed to house a collection of paintings and sculpture donated to the nation by the sugar merchant, Sir Henry Tate.

Since its opening in May 2000, the Tate’s newest gallery, Tate Modern, has been an overwhelming 2. success/successful, attracting 5.2 million visitors only in the first year.

The gallery is housed in the former bankside power station, originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed the 3. fame/famous red telephone box. The building contains more than 4.2 million 4. brick/bricks, however its chimney was limited to 99 metres so that it would be lower than the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral.

The collection of international modern 5. art/arty is displayed as four themed groups: landscape, the nude, still life and history painting. The themes link historical 6. work/works with contemporary ones, combine sculpture and painting with photography, film and video.

The 7. collection/collecting contains art dating from 1900 to the present day, with major works by Picasso, Dali, Matisse, Warhol and contemporary artists such as Gilbert & George and Susan Hiller.
