• Valentine’s Day

On 14 th February many people send a card to the one they love or                          

someone they have fallen in love with. The card is usually not signed,

so people spend a lot of time trying to guess who has sent them.

 

• Pancake Day:

Ash Wednesday is the day in February when the Lent period begins.                 

Many people give up eating during this period, but on Pancake Tuesday,

the day before Ash Wednesday, they eat pancakes.

Some towns also have pancake races: people run in the streets holding

a frying  pan throwing a pancake in the air.

 

• Easter:

The British celebrate the idea of new birth by giving each other

chocolate eggs eaten on Easter Sunday. On Good Friday bakers

sell hot cross buns. On Easter Monday a lot of people travel to

the seaside or watch sports events.

 

• May Day:

On 1st May Morris Men can be seen dancing in the country.                                                              

Children may also dance traditional spring dances, such as

the Maypole, when they weave coloured  scarves around a long

pole.

 

 

 

• Hallowe’en:

It means ’holy evening’, and takes place on 31st October.                                                              

It is connected with witches and ghosts. At parties people dress

up in starnge costumes and pretend they are witches. In recent years

children dress in white sheets, knock on doors and ask if you would

like  a ’trick’ or ’treat’. If people give them something nice, a ’treat’,

they go away. If you do not give them anything, they play a ’trick’ on you.

 

• Guy Fawkes Night:

In 1605 King James I was on the throne. As a Protestant he was not                                       

popular with Roman Catholics. Some of them planned to blow up

the Houses of Parliament on 5th November of that year. Under the

House of Lords  they stored 36 barrels of gun powder, which were

to be exploded by Guy Fawkes. However, Fawkes was discovered

arrested and later hanged. Since that day the British celebrate 5th of

November by burning a dummy made of straw and old clothes, called a

’guy’, like Guy Fawkes.

 

• Christmas:

The 25th of December, Christmas Day for most British families is the most important holiday of the year. 

It combines the celebration of the birth of Christ with the traditional festivities of winter. On the Sunday

before Christmas many churches hold a carol service. You can also hear carol singers in the streets and

they collect money for charity. Most families decorate their houses with brightly-coloured paper and holly,

and they usually have a Christmas tree, glittering with coloured lights. Family members wrap up their gifts

and leave them under the Christmas tree to be found on Christmas morning. Children leave a stocking at

the end of theirbed on Christmas Eve, 24th of December, hoping that Father Christmas will come down the

chimney and bring them presents. On Christmas Day the family has a big turkey dinner followed by

Christmas pudding. They pull a cracker which makes a loud noise and a coloured hat,a small toy and

a joke will fall out.The 26th of December is also a holiday, Boxing Day, when people visit friends or

go to sports events.
